The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) is the nation’s oldest and largest membership organization of blind and visually-impaired individuals with deep expertise in all aspects of blindness and low vision, as well as strong skills in education policy, accessible materials, and youth programs.
The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) is responsible for the organization and execution of two focus groups to provide feedback and guidance on the technologies proposed by and developed at the VDRDC. The focus groups will take place at each of the NFB national conventions during the project period.
In 2012, the NFB, VDRDC, and other DLN members will collaborate to organize a week-long professional development workshop for blind adults to acquire skills in the technical aspects of video description production. Participants will gain expertise in a variety of video-description skills including, script-writing and script-editing, recording and editing audio clips, and current guidelines for description of various types of video materials.
In 2013, the NFB will again host its Youth Slam, the largest gathering of blind and visually-impaired youth in the world, to provide hands-on experience and connection with blind and visually-impaired professionals in a wide variety of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. In collaboration with the VDRDC, the NFB will organize and host a Description Track at the Youth Slam to provide blind and visually-impaired youth with the concrete experience of adding descriptive information to video materials produced at the Youth Slam by other blind and visually-impaired participants. Youth Slam students will be mentored by video-description professionals, including graduates of the 2012 workshop.
These unique events will provide opportunities to connect participants with blind and visually-impaired mentors working in the area of description, a field in which a surprisingly small number of blind and visually-impaired adults have established careers.
